Excellent restaurants, bukas and nightclubs extend a warm welcome to visitors and liven up the sweet nights of Ouagadougou.

History of the City
The first inhabitants of Burkina Faso, the Nyonyosé ethnic group, created a small village called Kombemtinga, which means “warriors’ land'' in the 11th century. Naaba (Chief) Oubri set off from Tenkodogo, beat the Nyonyosé and conquered the western part of the country. He captured kombemtinga, settled there and changed the name of the town, which was mispronounced Ouagadougou, i.e., ''come and honour me''. Capital of the Mossi Empire from 1441 during the reign of Naaba Niandefo, Ouagadougou kept its status as capital of the newly independent State of Upper Volta in 1960, which became Burkina Faso in 1984. Administrative centre of the Central Region and the Kadiogo Province, Ouagadougou is in the middle of the country.
